GSTA - LEGISLATION UPDATE
TOW TRUCK DECALS

A Towman's Association for All Towmen

Most of you have received a letter from the New Jersey Division of Motor Vehicles regarding the new tow truck decals.  We want to clear up some of the most frequently asked questions.

The tow truck decals are part of S-1577, the overweight/length law passed in January of 2000.  The law created the permit program in the form of the new decals to identify legitimate towing companies with tow trucks for hire with proper insurance.

Beginning July 1, 2001 all tow trucks registered in New Jersey will be required to meet new liability insurance requirements and display special weight classification cab decals on both sides of the vehicles.

To register your truck, your application will be included with your registration renewal or applications and the decals are available at your local DMV.  Tow truck decals and registrations for IRP vehicles will be available at the IRP office only, not through the mail or your local DMV office.  Your application must include the following:

  1. A standard vehicle registration application or renewal notice

  2. A valid Certificate of Insurance with a minimum liability of $750,000 for light/medium duty (under 32,000 lbs.) and $1 million for heavy-duty (32,000 lbs and over).

  3. Documentation of manufacturer’s gross vehicle weight rating.  Either a manufacturer’s statement of origin (MSO) or owner/lessee certification on the application.
